When the clouds are heavy with wannabe rain and the middle of the week is weighing on your shoulders, it’s time for a cookout!
Some baby yellow squash from the Wednesday afternoon farmer’s market made the decision easy. During the spring and summer, we always keep veggie burgers and veggie dogs on hand for an impromptu cookout (as I’m sure you’ve noticed by now!), but the squash that graced the market today for the first time this season really pushed my menu over the edge. And it tasted great – so fresh and firm!
We’re blessed to have so many farmer’s markets to choose from in the DC area, and the Wednesday afternoon market in Alexandria is a little-known gem. As the season progresses, more and more vendors – and vegetables! – are showing up, which makes every trip a surprise. I can’t wait to see what they have in store for me next week!
The stats:
Burgers: $3.50/four ($0.88/person)
Buns: $0.99/eight ($0.12/person)
Potatoes: $1.50 ($0.75/person)
Squash: $2.50 ($1.25/person)
GRAND TOTAL: $8.49 … or $3.00 per person.
