It’s become a bit of a new tradition for LeeLee and me: When we first arrive across the bridge into Ocean City to start our beach vacation, we point the car in the direction of Papi’s Tacos, knowing it will set us on the right course for the week.
Papi’s is still somewhat of a newcomer to Ocean City, having been in service for only three years, but in that time it’s become well-entrenched and well-known for great food, excellent margaritas and good service. Even better for us veggie-types: The restaurant has an entire vegan menu with all our Mexican favorites! How can you go wrong?
We started off this year with some beverages – a skinny margarita for LeeLee (don’t judge; it’s a beach week!) and a Modelo beer for me. We tried mightily to limit ourselves on the chips and salsa, but as usual, that’s a losing proposition!
Then we got straight into it. I ordered the vegan quesadillas, which is one of my go-tos, and it did not disappoint. When I order, it never feels like enough food – but then it arrives and I find myself giving the last bit to LeeLee, and then I realize it is plenty! This time around, the cheese was slightly different from usual, a bit fluffier than I was expecting, but it was still really good. It reminded me more of a vegan cojita, which I’m sure was the point! Often they use a more smooth mozzarella-style cheese, which is equally good.
LeeLee, meanwhile, ordered two Beyond beef tacos “authentic style” – with cilantro, onion, shredded radish, nopales and lime – and a side of beans and rice to tide him over. The tacos – which you can order a la carte – are great, which is as it should be since “tacos” is in the name of the restaurant itself! No chip was left behind when LeeLee was done, that’s for sure.
We were seated at a window overlooking the main drag of Coastal Highway, which was good for people-watching, but if you have the option, select a seat with a view of the bar. It’s the best spot in the house to watch all the action in the hub of the restaurant AND keep an eye on the game!
I’m already looking forward to my next trip to Papi’s! And the beach, for that matter. Soon!
:)
